History of Everfall


    The following are excerpts from the Tome of Ages, an enchanted concordance of all written history stored on magic-laced pages deep within the ruins of Terminus.

Prologue: The Age of Immortals

    Even the words written in this chapter are mere historical speculation based on what little factual evidence there is before the Age of Dragons. It is said that there was one plane and the inhabitants were all immortal, ruled by a king and queen, Signus and Azrath. This lasted for many centuries before the tensions broke over a vital issue, driving the lovers apart. Each of their advisors split with them and became the Angels and Demons. This sundering of alliance broke the world apart, separating the heavens and hells and leaving our realm in between. This is as concise and correct as the information in this volume can dain to be at this time given the historical information present on this plane.

Chapter 1: The Age of Dragons

    When Everfall was young, all animal life was in the form of a beast. No men of any kind walked the world. Some beasts eventually developed magic and the greatest of these beasts were the dragons. The dragons came in five colors, black, red, blue, green, and gold, each with different powers and ambitions. Black dragons were masters of magic and could breath arcane energy and speak with magic words. Red dragons could spew fire and became the noblest of the bunch. Blue dragons found themselves with the powers of frost and are the most crafty and intelligent of the dragons. Green dragons became recluses and hunt in the wilds by breathing poison and acid on their prey. Gold dragons took to the skies and hunted the most unique places and artifacts of the land.
    This volume contains little information of the age beyond the nature of dragons, as written draconic history is a rarity. The rest of the information is gathered from ancient tomes kept in the lairs of once-great dragons.
    At one point, the black dragons found themselves in a position of power when they learned how to use their magic to conjure and create. In seeking conquest over all dragonkind, they created the first races of mortals. As personal servants and students of magic, they created the first elves, known by this tome as archelves. As soldiers and workers, they cut flesh from stone to create the first dwarves, similar to the Troggs of today. Black dragons began conquest of all dragonkind and through their powerful magic and new allies, did so quickly. They did not account for free will, however, and eventually, most of the archelves were able to escape the black dragon’s reign. The ones that remained were given a gift and blessed with a new form, that of the present-day Dragost.

Chapter 2: The Age of Elves

    The archelves held strong against the vengeful black dragons by finding allies in the other colors, also oppressed by the black dragons. They launched a full-scale revolution and overcame the black dragon horde in the war known as the Black Wave. The black dragon’s numbers were reduced to the hundreds and they scattered, leaving their Dragost and Trogg creations behind. The Dragost quickly secluded themselves and practically vanished from the face of the earth. The Troggs were left dumbfounded and lost and the archelves decided to take them up as servants like the black dragons did. The other dragons agreed upon a peace with the elves and scattered as well.
    Thousands of years passed and the archelves ceased to be as the elves diversified. The three elves we know of today were truly created and a caste system quickly arose, with High elves at the top, followed by Wood elves, and Dark elves nearly as lowly as the Trogg. The elves founded the city of Triastre and it became a seat of council for the elves, who were quickly segregating themselves. The Dark elves, however, were furious that they were reduced to the status of a Trogg and demanded equality, and when denied, used the Troggs to launch a revolt that was quickly quelled, but ended with the spurning of the Dark elves and banishment of the Troggs.
    Thousands more years passed and the Troggs evolved without masters, many of them becoming the Dwarves and Spor we know of today. Some, however, stayed Troggs and retained their servitude, but happily this time, towards their dwarven cousins, adding their might and muscle to the brains and artistry of the other dwarves. All dwarves have still retained a shaky friendship with the Dark elves to this day, but despise other elves, especially high elves, for the years of slavery they were unwittingly put through.
    The Dragost had uncovered some of the secrets of the black dragons and began to experiment, creating the first lycans, the Ursoc. The new races quickly scattered and distanced themselves from the Dragost. Meanwhile, the black dragons were also rebuilding for a battle. After they had sustenance and support, they began to craft the ultimate warrior, and the Hroggar were the result of their work. After hundreds more years, they struck again, and the Second Black Wave annihilated most of the remaining dragons and scattered the elves and dwarves across the globe. Only the Dragost were spared the century of destruction. A last ditch effort from elves, dwarves, and dragons stood against the last of the black dragon warriors, ruining them with their own magic by a powerful curse. As the dragons fell, their magic escaped them, and spread across the land, enchanting many areas of the world and bringing rise to the Twyll, Archon and a multitude of other races.
    As the Hroggar were subdued, many devolved into Humans over the course of thousands of years, and some, Hobbits. From then, many other hybridized races were created by the magic that was released from the fall of the black dragons. As the races formed, they spread across the world, the only true seat of power in the world being Triastre. All races were relatively homogenized across the world and were held together merely by survival. Little did the mortals know, though, that one black dragon survived and was plotting revenge.
    Skolrath, the last black dragon, rose from his hiding place over two thousand years after the dawn of man, having crafted the ultimate spell. He flew quickly to Triastre and wiped the city from the face of the earth. Without a seat of power, Skolrath quickly dominated humanity, ruling from his throne, The Black Caldera, and had convinced the other dragons that mortals were now a threat. The great war between dragons and mortals began.

Chapter 3: The Age of Terminus

    This Age is considered both a golden and dark age for mortals in turn, as the events that unfold detail the rise and fall of what is believed to be mortality’s only hope for true peace.
    From all across the globe, many races, including the Ursoc, Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Dragost, among some others found an island on the sea between the two landmasses they called home and began the construction of a metropolis of peace, a last hope. They named the fortress Terminus, and warded it against the dragons’ magic. From Terminus, a great plan was formulated as the world suffered. All of the world was at war except for this island. No person or council ruled Terminus, it was a true democracy, and the people developed spells and weapons that could be used only against dragons so as not to promote other wars. After a hundred years of seclusion, Terminus launched its assault, killing the cocky dragon emperor Skolrath in his own lair and nearly hunting the remaining dragons to extinction. All black dragons were dead and the rest went into hiding and removed themselves from the forefront of the world.
    The golden age of Terminus began as people could once again safely live their lives off the island, and for a thousand years, everyone prospered. The High elves, though, had a plan to make Terminus a seat of power for the world, and created a government in that vain, with a representative from each race being elected to serve on the Terminal council. As the politics grew, a political war and struggle began as different viewpoints clashed. The result was a series of political ally acquisition that resulted in strange a varied races being added to the council to garner votes. During a shouting match between the many many members of the council, a single Hroggar walked onto the floor, introducing himself only with his name, Odulf, and his axe, made from the scales of the black dragon Skolrath. He systematically murdered most of the councilmen and then retreated home, uniting all of the Hroggar tribes of the north on a crusade for world conquest instead of world peace through politics.
    During Odulf’s rampage, The First Terminal War, The Kodian Ursoc of the north were almost entierly slaughtered as they passed onto the continent of Evergarde proper. They had conquered most of the landmass before the council could reform and raise an army that could fight beings other than dragons. The entirety of each race’s armies could barely stand against the Hroggar, who had recruited the Lycan to their cause. After two decades of war, Odulf finally fell on the southern shore of Evergarde, near the south border of today’s Leminster.
    Again the politics of the council raged on, but due to the tensions brough on by war, further racial segregation occured. This proved problematic because now each race had an army at their disposal that could fight more than dragons.
    Two more Terminal Wars occured as various monstrous races from around the globe attempted to come to power. The Second Terminal war hit the dwarves hard, as the goblins came from the depths and assaulted them with Orc and Troll allies. They had to plead with the High elf dominated council to garner aid, and when unable to do so, set out to solve their own problems. They fused multiple consciousnesses into one being in a body made of metal and clockwork, powered by steam and energy. The first Gear were used as ultimate fighting machines to defeat the goblins, and when the goblins began to slow their efforts against the dwarves, they targeted the elves, who obtained immediate council support and ended the war. Outraged by the turn of events, the dwarves left Terminus completely.
    The Third Terminal War started when a cult of ambitious mages began to hunt and enslave dragons. This cult called itself the Dragonheart and through the enslaved dragons, they channeled dragon spirits of old to infuse themselves with power, many of them ascending to becoming dragons themselves. As they began to search for the lost tomb of Skolrath, the Terminal council finally found out about the new dragons. Many of the weapons were lost to the ages and as they went to war without the dwarves or gear, they found themselves woefully outmatched. A powerful Dark elf witch named Inen tapped into black magic to call upon Skolrath’s spirit deep underneath Terminus and commune with him about the fate of the world and the plans of Dragonheart. Not wanting his power siphoned from his ancient bones, he aided the council’s army by letting animating shadow from the beyond, ripping the veil as the Wraith flooded the battlefields. The council quickly won the battle, but the Wraith turned upon them in the aftermath. Eventually the Wraith were pushed back and Inen was found guilty of treason for communing with an enemy of Terminus. She was executed in the middle of a council session, days later, splintering what was left of the Terminal Council.
    Each race began to create radical factions and split. Mass migrations occurred as enemies moved away from each other to lands they believed would be more accepting of them. Terminus fell into a state of disrepair as many of its denizens left. Its language, culture, and knowledge forever lost, except for this Tome, which dutifully records history as it occurs for all time.

Chapter 4: The Age of Nations

    The time following is the time of the present and will be recorded hence as the Age of Nations:
     After a couple thousand years after the Fall of Terminus, the nations began to truly form, each creating its own territory, religions, and customs. Each was small in its time, but began to grow as populations rose and territorial greed reared its ugly head. In this time, each race had splintered into its own nation or nations. Many remnants of Terminal society remains to this day, as the non-nation hamlets, villages, and small cities across the world are diverse and free of the hatred of the Terminal Council. The nations themselves, however, were relatively homogeneous with few exceptions. The nations that formed were as follows:

  • Caeloth was formed mainly by humans and hobbits.
  • Kodia was rebuilt farther east of its original home by the Kodian Ursoc.
  • Panursa survived hidden for thousands of years since Terminal times on Iveria.
  • Triastre was rebuilt magically in its original location and an uneasy alliance of elves was formed in the nation Thellonde.
  • The Dwarves and Gear formed a two-capitol nation, Dos being the gear collective and Grimaldi the dwarf kindom. The Gear are no longer servants of the dwarves, nor does either race know of the Gear’s origins, but they are fast friends.
  • Roth was formed from a different, nonreligious sect of humankind that, over many years in the deserts, developed a darker skin hue than their Caelothian kin. They also took to the Wraith as allies, being more accepting of others, not being accepted themselves.
  • Tiberia was founded by Panthera and Merfolk alike, becoming a cultural center that none could parallel. Many wood elves also remain in Tiberia.
  • Catiline was founded by Earth and Frost Archons, the only two of the four elements without wanderlust or nomad-ism built in to their personalities. They have a strict order system and a desire to expand.
  • The nations of the north splintered into six tribes after the fall of Odulf, the Bearmantle, Frosthorn, Icemane, Wyrmskull, Stormrider, and Earthclan, and remained benign outside of their subcontinent.
  • Many other races, like the Dragost, formed societies but never elevated to nation status. In addition, many tiny nations not of worth to note rose and fell over time.

    After another thousand years of development, the Archelf Council, the three leading heads of Thellonde in Triastre, decided that they would bring about a new Terminal era and unite the world like it once was in its golden age, whether the world wanted to unite or not. In revolt, a young and upcoming Triastren councilman and mage named Leminster yelled out of turn in the Archelf Council meeting and was banished. He fled across the sea and became a powerful mage over the course of the next half-century. He knew that he had time, as the elves were deliberate, but he wanted to act fast to prevent a world war. He carved a tower into the top of a mountain, now known as Leminster’s Pike, and from there he cast a spell upon Triastre that stopped time in its tracks for a century. The effort almost killed Leminster, and manipulating time had aged him considerably. His own spell to buy him 100 years of time from Triastre had cost him 100 years of his own life. He settled down in a small hamlet near a lake and began to spread his philosophy. Much to his surprise, the locals caught on, and the small town, whose original name is lost became a city state named after Leminster himself. He was asked to run the city and graciously accepted, making it a paragon of virtue much as the orignal Terminus was, except that nobody was forced in or out of society. As the city state grew, the surrounding hamlets swore fealty for equality and a nation of its own right was born.

    Since that day, 60 years have passed, leaving Leminster at the age of 263, 100 years older than he should be at this time. Now, Triastre is back on the move, A mysterious tribe-less Hroggar claiming to be Odulfson and wielding the same axe is reuniting the Hroggar tribes once again, the humans of Caeloth wish to spread their religion about the globe, and the Imperial Catalinians vie for land while the Tiberian suffer in revolt, war is on the horizon.
